General Information

Not for nothing is Shanghai China's fashion capital. The Shanghainese pride themselves on being chic, and there are plenty of beautiful things on sale everywhere. Sizes run small here, with an Asian L sometimes equivalent to a Western size 6. Designer stores sometimes carry larger sizes, but tailors are often a better option for those who can't buy off the rack here.

Swimwear and lingerie can be a challenge, as well. Swimwear, when you can find it, is fashionable only in a retro sort of way (think boy-cut 1940s suits), and available only in smaller sizes. Bras are similarly smaller-sized, and all bras in Shanghai are padded. Things are brightening in the lingerie department, at least, as the dowdy undergarments of yesterday are now being replaced by lacy thongs and bustiers.

Most women have something tailored for formal occasions, or buy something off the rack from Shanghai-based designer Xavier (X). For those who can fit into Asian sizes, the wedding boutiques will rent formal gowns -- which range from frothy Scarlett O'Hara numbers to more sophisticated creations -- beginning at RMB 150/day.
